William Shakespeare, Sonnets of Time: Songs for Medium Voice by Alexander Thorburn

Sonnets of Time is a project inspired by a play co-written with Canadian actor/director Peter Van Wart, who was associated with the Globe Theatre in London. Originally involving songs based on Shakespeare‘s sonnets for a non-singing performer, the play itself was never produced. Instead, the project evolved into a collection of ten songs, each interpreting a famous Shakespeare sonnet with simple, popular-style music.

The songs represent a life journey from birth to death, with adventurous harmonic language and melodies reflecting the natural inflection of an English speaker. The rhythms are directly influenced by the original texts of the sonnets. Interestingly, it is believed that Shakespeare wrote these sonnets for financial gain, possibly commissioned by an unknown patron, and they were the only works he published in his lifetime. His recognition as a playwright only came posthumously, despite the production of his plays during his life.

Sonnets of Time est un projet inspiré d'une pièce co-écrite avec l'acteur/réalisateur canadien Peter Van Wart, associé au Globe Theatre de Londres. Impliquant à l’origine des chansons basées sur les sonnets de Shakespeare pour un interprète non chanteur, la pièce elle-même n’a jamais été produite. Au lieu de cela, le projet a évolué vers une collection de dix chansons, chacune interprétant un célèbre sonnet de Shakespeare avec une musique simple et populaire.

Les chansons représentent un voyage de vie, de la naissance à la mort, avec un langage harmonique aventureux et des mélodies reflétant l'inflexion naturelle d'un anglophone. "Sonnets of Time" ist ein Projekt, inspiriert von einem Theaterstück, das gemeinsam mit dem kanadischen Schauspieler/Regisseur Peter Van Wart geschrieben wurde, der mit dem Globe Theatre in London in Verbindung stand. Ursprünglich umfasste es Lieder, die auf Shakespeares Sonetten für einen nicht singenden Darsteller basierten, doch das Stück selbst wurde nie produziert. Stattdessen entwickelte sich das Projekt zu einer Sammlung von zehn Liedern, von denen jedes ein berühmtes Shakespeare-Sonett mit einfacher, populärer Musik interpretiert.

Die Lieder stellen die Lebensreise von der Geburt bis zum Tod dar, mit abenteuerlicher harmonischer Sprache und Melodien, die die natürliche Betonung eines englischsprachigen Sprechers widerspiegeln. Die Rhythmen sind direkt von den Originaltexten der Sonette beeinflusst. Es wird angenommen, dass Shakespeare diese Sonette als Auftragswerke schrieb, möglicherweise im Auftrag eines unbekannten Gönners. Sie sind die einzigen Werke, die er zu Lebzeiten veröffentlichte.
